There are many ways to make a great first impression, and being dragged to a sex toy event the first time you meet someone probably isn’t something that happens every day. However, this is exactly what happened when I met St. Lucia Racer the other week. I’d been invited to a press event by Lovehoney and we’d met for a quick drink beforehand, but we were getting on well, so I decided to bring him along to the event as a plus one.
But anyway, the purpose of the event was to talk about the results of a new survey by Lovehoney: The Sexual Happiness Study 2019. The brand surveyed 3,000 people online across the US, the UK, and Australia aged 18-65+, representative of different genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and relationship statuses.
So without further ado here are the main findings from the survey.
The benefits of sex
49% of those surveyed said the biggest benefit of sex was strengthening their relationship with their partner, which rose to 65% among those engaged to be married (aww- aren’t we a sentimetal bunch?). Other popular benefits of sex included the expected, such as “puts me in a good mood” (45%), and “gives me something to think about/ look forward to” (16%), and the not so expected, such as “helps me sleep better at night” (33%) and “helps improve my concentration” (7%). There were also some bigger benefits than expected in there, including “helps improve my mental health” (25%), “gives me more confidence”(20%), and “it stops me feeling unhappy” (14%). So it appears sex can do more than we think it can!
When it comes to experimentation, it appears that simple is the most popular. Far from swingers parties and pegging, both men and women selected trying a new position as their favourite way of adding more variety into their sex life (51% and 49% respectively). After that, men selected massages (33%), sex toys (30%), intimate talk and sharing fantasies (29%), and different partners (27%), while women selected massages (42%), different settings e.g. candlelight (40%), sex toys (37%), and props (lingerie, blindfold etc.) (35%).
Worst things about sex
Being over too quickly (34% vs. 29%), not having an orgasm (21% vs. 28%), and interruptions (28% vs. 27%) featured in the top 5 worst things about sex for both men and women. For women, feeling self-conscious topped the list with 30% of the vote, so it seems us ladies have some work to do, either on our self-esteem or finding partners we feel comfortable with. For men, not getting your partner to orgasm (30%) and catching an STI (17%) also made the list, wheras for women not enough foreplay (24%) made it to the top 5.
The survey revealed the respondents most common celebrity crushes, with some more expected than others! For men, popular crushes included Chris Hemsworth, Adam Lambert, Tom Hardy, Keanu Reeves, Channing Tatum, Idris Elba, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, and Rupert Grint, while female crushes included Mila Kunis, Demi Lovato, Tina Turner, Ellen Page, Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, and Whoopi Goldberg.
What do you think of the results? Let me know in the comments!
