Love Island Commentary

Have You Ever Been Michael’d?

July 21, 2019

In the first few weeks of this years’ series of Love Island, Michael and Amber emerged as the front runners to win. They weren’t initially attracted to each other, but as they got to know each other it became obvious there was chemistry. The public didn’t warm to Amber initially as some of her early remarks were pretty rude, however her romance with Michael and close friendships with Anna and Yewande showcased a more positive side of her personality.

have you ever been michaeld?

Enter Casa Amor. This years’ series had been pretty slow up to this point; the cast and drama hadn’t been as engaging as the previous couple of years. But the mid-series twist shook things up. Before the girls left, there were three strong couples we expected to last- only one actually did. Michael decided that there were things he wasn’t happy with in his relationship with Amber, so he switched his attentions to newcomer Joanna.

Bearing in mind, Michael hadn’t actually discussed any of these issues with Amber beforehand. My guess is, the tweet revealed in a challenge where a member of the public accused him of being “whipped” got to him, he didn’t have the guts to stand up to her, and being in a villa with six girls itching to stay in the show inflated his head.

But the worst thing about Michael’s behaviour (in my opinion) wasn’t that he opted for someone else, but how he treated Amber afterwards. When she returned from Casa Amor, instead of simply apologising and explaining that he’d met someone he felt was better suited to him, he went on a rant about all these things that Amber had supposedly done. He later went on this crusade about how CHALDISH she supposedly was (with no real reasoning), and was rude to her on several occasions.

Several of the other Islanders remarked that there was still a spark between Michael and Amber, and him and Joanna didn’t have the same chemistry. Which from the outside, seemed the case. But Michael was adamant that him and Amber were done, and Joanna was the one for him. When Joanna got voted off, he claimed he’d “found what he was looking for” (although didn’t actually leave with her).

However, things changed when new boy Greg entered the villa. Cute with a law degree and sexy Irish accent, Greg made a beeline for Amber. On their date in the hideaway, sparks were flying, and he has since shown an obvious interest.

And all of a sudden- big surprise- Michael has decided that he’s interested again.

Someone once did a study with fish. They found that when mating, fish would flock to whichever fish was the brightest, but if all fish were equally bright, they’d flock to whichever fish the other fish were going for. Humans aren’t that different from fish. Subconsciously, we are wired to want someone who’s in demand. Ever found that when you’ve been single for ages you can’t seem to find anyone half-decent who’s interested, but as soon as you get into a relationship you suddenly get hit on all the time and former flames crawl out from the woodwork? When he had two girls vying for his attentions, it went to his head and Michael treated Amber like dirt. But now she’s got a sexy Irishman going for her and his former squeeze has been sent home, the tables have turned, and all of a sudden Michael has realised he has feelings for her, and did all along.

Luckily, Amber has seen sense and given sexy Greg a shot, rather than following (what could have been) her instinct and going back to what she knows best. Here’s hoping their romance blossoms, and she doesn’t end up on the day bed with Michael in a couple of days time. And here’s hoping other women follow suit. Find a strong man who appreciates you and has the balls to raise issues in your relationship to her face, rather than a weak man who only realises he’s interested when someone else recognises your worth.

Have you been Michael’d and had an ex crawl our from the woodwork when you found someone new? Let me know in the comments!

I swear my ex has a sixth-sense. He ALWAYS manages to text/snap/contact me within 24 hours of seeing someone new. It’s crazy! Being Michael’d is such a thing.

I’ve never really been Michael’d but I have had instances where boys I was “seeing” always seem to crop up when they break up with their current girlfriends… *eyeroll*
