Smudged Lipstick Murder Mystery Party Review [AD]

February 17, 2019

Valentine’s Day hasn’t always been my favourite time of year. With the exception of last year, I have never had a date on Valentine’s Day. However, for the past few years award-winning dating events company Smudged Lipstick have put on a range of Anti-Valentine’s Day events, so singles can also make an occasion of the day. This year though, the brand decided to do something a little different, so read on for my Smudged Lipstick murder mystery party review…

Who are Smudged Lipstick?

For those of you who haven’t heard of the company, I thought I’d start with a little introduction to Smudged Lipstick. A few years ago, dating blogger Jordi Sinclair quit his stable PR job and started his own dating events company. A break from traditional speed dating, Smudged Lipstick focuses on quirky alternative dating events, such as singles life drawing, dirty scrabble, and cards against humanity dating. The company also runs other cool non-dating events, such as the popular “Diary Days”.

The Venue

The Smudged Lipstick Anti Valentine’s Day murder mystery party was held at The Steel Yard, near Momument in central London. It’s a nightclub set under old railway arches which makes for a great atmosphere. There’s also a bar where you can buy drinks.

When I first booked my ticket to this event, I was envisioning the typical murder mystery party- where everyone has to be a character then work out who dun it. So when I realised there were 130 people attending, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen.

Smudged Lipstick had collaborated with murder mystery company Play Dead London to create a large-scale event. The attendees were split into smaller tables, and a bunch of actors reenacted the tale in various rounds and at the end each group had to guess who the perpetrator was.

The story was based around the murder of dating app founder Ernest J. Cunningham. The highly unlikable entreprepneur was murdered at the launch of his new dating app Thumpr- and the only people who could have done it were the guests in the VIP area- including a vivacious dating blogger and his long-suffering fiancee. There were rounds where each table could interview the suspects, read witness statements, and check everyone’s profile on Thumpr. At the end, each table made their predictions and the perpetrator was revealed.

In terms of “meeting someone” as it were, it would be a little harder at this event than a standard Anti-Valentine’s mixer, as for the most part we were restricted to our tables. (Although this may have changed later on in the evening as I had to leave after the murder mystery stuff). However, the format of the event was definitely a lot more interesting- and definitely something I’d recommend if you’re at a loose end on Valentine’s Day.

Smudged Lipstick may be hosting another murder mystery party next Valentine’s Day- however the company are looking to run more murder mystery nights in the meantime, so make sure to check out their website for any updates. You can also follow them on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.
