5 Reasons To Date A Vegan

Known for being easily offended and annoying as hell, vegans don’t have the best of reputations. Despite having the best interest of animals and the environment at heart, studies have shown that 34% of daters would consider veganism a dealbreaker in a potential partner.

However, aside from of the extreme types on social media (and let’s face it, most of social media is extreme these days), vegans aren’t all that bad. In fact, most of them are actually pretty great. So in the spirit of #Veganuary, here are 5 reasons you should reconsider if you’re in the 34%.

1. Willpower of steel

Think of all the temptations vegans experience on a daily basis. Cheese. Beefburgers. Cake. Cheese. Chocolate. Steak. Tuna. Poached eggs. Cheese. BUT THEY RESIST. And stick with kale sandwiches and quinoa burgers, because the animals matter more.

There are always temptations. An attractive stranger at a bar on a friend’s stag weekend, or perhaps a flirtatious work colleague. But answer me this. Do you think someone with willpower strong enough to stick to the vegan diet is going to cheat on you?

2. Animal lover

My uncle hates all animals, particularly dogs. My aunt nagged him for a dog, and eventually he caved and got a collie named Bob. My uncle hated Bob, so Bob was confined to the garden and the conservatory. When he died, they didn’t get any more pets.

Imagine being married to someone like that. 

But rest assured that with a vegan, you’ll be able to live it up with 6 rescue dogs.

3. Healthier

With processed meats being classed as a Grade I carcinogen, and even dairy being a cancer risk, there’s no denying that steps towards a more plant-based diet are needed in order to minimise health risks. Vegans have the lowest rates of cancer, along with a decreased risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

This might not seem like a big deal now. But flash forward to 10 years time. Do you really want your partner to die on you when you have two young children?

4. In shape

The vegan diet rules out pretty much anything unhealthy, shedding any excess poundage and leaving in its place a trim physique.

5. A higher purpose

I don’t know about you, but I find most people these days are so boring. Work aside, their lives consist of instant gratification and temporary hedonism. No hobbies aside from drink and drugs, no causes that they care about. Or perhaps they decide they’re “woke” and start posting annoying things online.

But like religion or charity work, veganism gives your life a higher purpose. Not just living for today, you spend your life working towards a better deal for animals. Vegans have substance.

  1. Please be careful about proclaiming carcinogen risk in red meat. You’ve fallen into the same trap that the media has. Most people only the most rudimentary understanding of stats and don’t know the difference between relative and absolute increases. If a risk factor rises from 1/100 to 21/100, that’s a rise of 20%. Yet a rise from 5/10,000,000 to 6/10,000,000 can also rightly be declared as a 20% rise when both rates are negligible. The difference is the former is absolute and the latter is relative. An increase from 5-6 in anything is always a relative rise of 20%, counting in hundreds, thousands, millions and even billions.

    The media went with the shocking statistic when the fact is the risk of eating red meat in itself is negligible. The 18.1% in the Guardian article doesn’t explain which metric they are using but most studies use relative because the numbers look bigger and therefore make more of an impact.
